Same-Day Crowns: What Can I Eat After I Get One?

When Is It Safe to Eat Normally With a Same-Day Crown?

If you recently received one of our same-day crowns at French Smiles, congratulations on restoring your smile in just one visit! CEREC technology has made the process faster and more comfortable than ever, and patients love skipping the temporary crown stage entirely. But once you’re back home, a very practical question tends to come up: what can you actually eat now?

The good news is that same-day crowns are made from durable ceramic and are permanently bonded to your tooth before you leave our office, so you’re not dealing with a fragile temporary restoration. That said, your mouth does need a little time to adjust, and there are some smart dietary choices that will protect your new crown and keep you comfortable in the days following your appointment.

The First 24 Hours

Right after your procedure, your gums may feel a bit tender and your bite might feel slightly different as you get used to the new crown. During the first 24 hours, it’s best to stick with soft foods that don’t require much chewing. Good options include yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, soup, smoothies, oatmeal, and soft fish. These foods are gentle on the treated area and won’t put any unnecessary stress on the crown while everything settles in.

It’s also a good idea to avoid very hot or very cold foods and beverages for the first day or so. Some patients experience a little temperature sensitivity right after getting same-day crowns, and this typically fades quickly on its own.

What to Avoid in the First Week

As the days go by, most patients feel completely normal and forget they even have a new crown. Still, during the first week, it’s wise to avoid a handful of things:

  • Hard foods such as raw carrots, hard pretzels, crusty bread, and hard candy can put pressure on a new crown and should be kept off the menu for now.
  • Sticky foods are another category to watch out for.
  • Caramel, taffy, gummy candies, and even some dried fruits can pull at a crown and potentially affect how it sits.
  • Chewy foods like tough cuts of meat and dense bagels are also worth avoiding until your mouth feels fully back to normal.

If you grind your teeth at night, let Dr. French know. A night guard can protect your same-day crown (and your natural teeth) from the kind of sustained pressure that grinding creates.

What You Can Enjoy

One of the great things about same-day crowns is that the recovery period is minimal compared to other dental procedures. Within a few days, most patients are back to eating a full, normal diet with no restrictions. Well-cooked vegetables, pasta, rice, soft proteins like chicken and fish, eggs, bananas, avocado, and dairy products are all fine options even in the early days. As long as you’re staying away from the sticky, hard, and chewy items mentioned above, you have plenty of delicious food to choose from.

Long-Term Care for Your Crown

Same-day crowns are designed to last for many years with proper care, and the dietary habits that protect a new crown are actually just good habits to keep long-term. Biting on ice, chewing on pens, or using your teeth to open packaging can damage any crown over time, so it’s worth being mindful of those habits. If you ever notice that your crown feels loose, uneven, or uncomfortable, reach out to us right away so we can take a look.

Brushing twice a day and flossing daily are just as important around a crown as they are around natural teeth. The crown itself can’t decay, but the tooth structure beneath it and the gum tissue around it still need regular care. Routine checkups at French Smiles give Dr. French the opportunity to check the integrity of your crown and catch anything that might need attention early.
